Happy New Year

Happy new year folks.  Couple of months there when I was off to other things.  One of which is that my oldest son introduced me to World of Warcraft.  Not a whole lot of science content there, but I don't do science all the time.

It looks like some of the comments you made during my disappearance didn't come up even though I approved them, I thought.  They should be there now. 

During my blog-vacation, I did have a number of ideas for articles, and made some progress on background work for some.  So things will be livening up.

Veteran's Day

I'll take this chance to thank Veterans for their efforts to preserve our civil liberties and freedoms.  That including one of my sons.
I'll also take the opportunity to thank and encourage another of my sons in his exercise of his civil liberties and freedoms -- in spite of the slander campaign now being waged against him.   Or, really, because of it.  You don't get that kind of response unless you're doing something right. 

I've never really done anything that would peeve people of that kind of power.  But, in their different ways, all three of my sons are doing so.

As for most things, the most media coverage is of the bad performers of a profession. But I grew up seeing my grandmother (another teacher) doing exactly as described, and see my sisters doing so when I visit them.  And some of my teachers, my kids' teachers, and so on were/are obviously doing likewise. 

It's American Education week, so I'll invite folks to contribute their stories of favorite teachers this week.

Catching up on comments

I'm on my way back from break and catching up in general, not just on comments. It looks like several species of bizarreness chose to break loose while I was taking my break, and it'll be a while to catch up to those too.

Several comments in on summer reading.  My current summer reading is The Karamazov Brothers, by Fyodor Dostoevsky.  It's the Wordsworth Classics edition, which I picked up for about $4.50 in St. Petersburg, Russia.  Yes, there's a story involved, and I'll get to that in a later note.  There might even be a picture or two.

Two more comments on When will the ice be gone?.  Ecologists are a good group to try to get ideas from (per Hank's comment about how to get an idea of what levels of ice loss are particularly meaningful).  And I see that Belette and I have an area of interesting agreement, [update, that's disagreement] which suggests a later post to be made.  Our point of broader agreement is that neither of us takes my estimate in that post terribly seriously.  My aim being more to illustrate a way to approach the question.  The exact answer ... not so important.

Crandles has some thoughts about Sea ice estimations.  One quick response I'll make is that a reason for some of the variation, or lack thereof, is that the curves are for 14 day averages.  Consequently, you won't see much happening at shorter time scales.

Summer break

It'll be very quiet here for the next few weeks.  Even though I'm not in school, summer break is not a bad idea.

Not sure what I'll be doing for my break reading.  Thoughts about good summer reading, for me or others, welcome.

Autism Awareness Day

April 2nd is Autism Awareness Day.  To get information about autism, see Autism Speaks. This site was recommended to me by someone who is very knowledgeable about autism, both personally and professionally. Update: And now, a few words from her:

April is Autism Awareness Month

I’m using quality blog space on my brother’s site (and he’ll have to do the retyping) to address what autism awareness means to the families and friends of people with autism.

Current statistics cite that 1 in 110 people has some form of autism (CDC, 2010); of that 110, 70 are boys. As a very basic definition, autism is a neurological disorder (notice I don’t say disease) that affects a person’s communication, social/emotional skills and behavior throughout the course of that person’s life. There is no cure, though people respond to a smorgasbord of interventions that can include behavioral therapy, speech/language therapy and communication systems, occupational and/or physical therapy, changes in diet, and my personal favorites – social skills training and play therapy.

Even though they may fall under the umbrella of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs), people with autism are as individual as snowflakes. One of my friends with autism has an encyclopedic knowledge of dinosaurs; another will only eat crunchy foods due to sensory needs. A third sounds like a robot when she talks. The lives of those we love who have autism are endlessly fascinating and sometimes just plain old quirky. But if we look at ourselves through their eyes, we’re strange, weird creatures ourselves. For example, why can’t we just say what we mean? Why does it bother you if I stand nose-to-nose with you when we’re talking? Why can’t we all just talk about dinosaurs all day long? Why do I have to have my smushy foods on the same plate as my crunchy foods and why do you do that thing where you put two arms around me and squeeze me?

My job as an advocate for people with autism is to remind us all that we don’t get to measure the quality of someone else’s life simply by the alphabet soup that surrounds their name. Maybe Shaniqua has PDD-NOS and John has Asperger’s Syndrome and Stephanie has classic ASD and Ezekiel has Fragile-X (all of these are types of autism) – but last time I checked, these are people who have favorite movies and favorite foods and who love to laugh with friends and avoid chores like the rest of us.

There’s a reason the national symbol for autism awareness is a puzzle piece. On the one hand, autism is confusing: a puzzle with multiple pieces that requires lots of us working together to understand. On the other hand, and this is my own analogy, people with autism are the puzzle pieces: necessary to completing the picture that is our humanity. They fit within our lives and they certainly fit within our hearts. And thank goodness for it.

Movie time sort of

There's a movie site that decided that it would be a good idea to interview non-movie people about their tastes in movies.  I kind of liked the idea, since I'm often disagreeing with movie industry folks about movies.  So when I was invited to answer some movie questions, I did so.  You can see the result at

I'm kind of impressed at the author's skill there -- finding what must be about the only two scientist characters from movies that I look better than.  (My wife would say that the list is much longer, and maybe she's right.  Just in case, I'm still not taking her in to get her eyes checked.)

But the 'masses' bit, and another part of the article bring up an interesting point about science and scientists, or at least about how I think about it, and that is the role of 'smartness'.
One line of it is, contrary to the interviewer's saying that I'm too polite to say I'm smarter than you, it's not a matter of politeness.  There are two parts to that.  One is, simply, I have no idea.  Most of you, I've never met to have any idea how smart you are.  To judge by the questions, many of my readers are quite bright, so I'm duly hesitant to make such an easily challenged claim..

The other side of this line is that I have long felt that intelligence, smartitude, was not represented well by a single number, or by a single test.  There are some things I'm good at.  But other sorts of things, I'm not very good at.  Both being things that involve intelligence, or at least some kind of intelligence.  The case was made independently and well by Howard Gardner.  His most recent book (that I've read, at least) being Intelligence Reframed: Multiple Intelligences for the 21st Century.   It's something he's been working on for over 20 years now.  The basic idea is that there are indeed different intelligences.  One being a math/logical reasoning type, but also a language intelligence, and an artistic one, and several others.  So, even if it were established that I were more intelligent on the math, chances are excellent that you're more intelligent on one or several of the others (pretty much everybody has me beat on the artistic).

The other line is even more important, and something I touched on implicitly in Do I have to be good at math to be good at science.  Namely, a lot of what matters is whether you're willing to do the work.  Smartness is a talent -- it makes it easier for you to do something (learn some topic for instance).

I'll analogize.  People can be talented at running, or playing basketball, and so on.  For running, I have a modest amount of talent, enough to be ahead of, say, 65% of people my age and gender if we all were to get in to shape and train comparably well.  The reality, though, is that I finish ahead of 99% or more of them.  It isn't because I have more talent than that many.  It's because almost all of them aren't in shape and didn't even come out to the race.  A large fraction of them have more talent than me -- if they did train, they'd beat me.  In the same vein, if they train harder and smarter, people with far less talent can beat me even when I'm training reasonably.

So it goes for science as well.  You can be very smart, and smart in something relevant, but if you don't do the work, you don't get very far.  On the other hand, someone who doesn't have as much smartness can do much better -- because they're willing to do the work.   Your best results, same as for sports, will be with people who both have a lot of talent and do a lot of work.

How to handle personal attacks

It's always a pleasure, in part because of how rare and difficult it is, to see someone respond well to a host of personal attacks.  One of those exceptional, and funny, responses is from Rebecca Watson, the 'skepchick'.  Apparently quite a few folks have decided that rather than respond to the content of her arguments, they'll comment about her eyebrows and other such irrelevancies.

The reason for the moderately large number of elements discovered since the original song is that the original was done in the early 1960s. 

Snowflakes and climate

This weekend's snow put me in mind of a climate change reality.  As I've mentioned before, weather will still happen.  But that can be hard to picture.

So picture this: It's snowing fairly hard.  We're getting 1-2 inches (2-5 cm) accumulation per hour of fairly fluffy snow.  There's a breeze from my left to right.  The climate for these snowflakes, namely what we expect to see, is a steady fall with some steady motion from my left to right.  If I just look at the general picture, that's what I see -- the climate.  If I focus in on a particular snowflake, I see it moving in all directions.  Sometimes it's moving extra fast, compared to the others, down or to my right.  But sometimes I see the snowflake move to the left, or even up, completely against what we expect from the climate.

That is the weather.  (At least for the purpose of the example it's weather, in specific detail, it is turbulence.)  Even though every snow flake does average -- its climate -- moving down and to my right, the weather, the short term motions, can be in the opposite direction.  If you look closely enough, every snow flake spends some time going opposite its climate direction.

So it goes with climate.  While the general tendency is one thing, there's no surprise that if you look at the earth for short periods (like years, rather than the meaningful 20-30 years) you'll see the opposite of the long-term expectation happen.  Sometimes the snowflake moves upwards.

PhD Thesis Defended

I've been the (name of employer)-side mentor for a student working on her PhD.  Yesterday, she successfully defended her PhD thesis.  Not sure she wants to be named, so I won't for now.  But it's a lot of work to get to where she is, and I'll congratulate her.  She knows who she is :-)  Good job!

Veteran's Day

Veteran's Day or, in some other parts of the world, Remembrance Day today.

Fathering scientists

It's really a matter of parenting scientists, but this will appear on Father's Day. That is, suppose you're a parent and would like your child (children) to appreciate science. Not that they should become scientists -- I don't believe that this is the only career to pursue even though I did do so. (I also had my time pursuing engineering and computer science. I ended up going with the science, but it was a real question up through completing my undergraduate degree and receiving an engineering job offer.)

In this, I'll largely be drawing from examples my mother set. A good parent learns from all good parents, not just those of their own gender.

As a parent, perhaps the greatest thing you can support in your kids is the idea "The universe is a very interesting place." You don't need to know all the science yourself. It might even be a benefit if you don't. In any case, it's a family article of faith that children are born scientists -- investigators of the universe around them. When they start asking about why the sky is blue, grass green, ants are going that way, clouds are puffy rather than stringy ... cheer. You don't need to know the answers yourself. It doesn't take many years before your kids are asking questions that nobody knows the answer to. So, maybe answer where you know the answer. Where you don't, one or more of: "That's interesting. I don't know the answer. What do you think it is? How could we figure it out? Where would we search on the net?" is wonderful. The universe is incredibly interesting. If you're no great fan of insects, and find yourself parent (or, in my case, uncle) to a child who thinks they're incredibly interesting, cheer their interest. Insects are very interesting, at least to folks who study them, or maybe found fireflies pretty, and so on. In any case, I learned from my mother that you don't need to share the exact interest, and certainly don't need to know a lot about that particular thing*. The universe is interesting. That includes the parts you're not enthusiastic about yourself.

Second major thing is -- not all ideas will work out, and that's ok. "You'll think of more ideas later, and they'll be even better." Abandoning ideas that don't work out, I mentioned earlier, is one of the central skills of a scientist. If the idea doesn't work, don't spend your time 'reassuring' your child that it's 'ok that you failed'. They didn't fail, period. They successfully carried out one of the most important things a scientist can do -- test an idea and realize it doesn't work. Another better response is "Ok, since this doesn't quite work, what do you think might work instead?" Almost every idea that a scientist has, doesn't work. I doubt this is unique to science, so whether your child goes anywhere near science it's a good skill to have -- to have your idea not work, and to take it in stride and move on to the next idea.

I didn't even remember the example myself, but in my 20s or so, mom mentioned my 'blood theory of life'. I was 4 at the time, she said. The theory was, "We all have a finite amount of blood. When it runs out, say because of a trauma like a car accident or a blood disease like leukemia destroying healthy blood cells, you die." (I did know about leukemia at that age.) I don't exactly remember the responses (hey, I was 4, and 4 was ... several ... years ago), but I'm positive it wasn't "my what a wonderful idea". It was, I'm sure, in the vein of "That doesn't work because bone marrow makes more blood cells, so the supply isn't limited." Far better answer. Told me the idea didn't work, and told me something new that I could then think about more. Wow. There's even more to learn about the universe! And, it is possible for me to learn it!

This is another major skill to encourage in your children. "You may not know or understand something now, but you can learn it." Maybe they have to devote some time or effort, but it can be done. Things are possible, and regardless of where you are today, in time you can get where you'd like. Again, nothing unique to science about this. And, for that reason, a good reason to encourage it with respect to science. The skill, learning more stuff, is needed for almost everything. In science, finding out more about the universe -- that your child finds interesting -- the rewards follow more immediately from the effort than might be in other areas. In sports, if your child loves any healthy sport, support that. Skills can transfer, most especially the skill of training to do their sport well. Later, when some other sport becomes the greater interest, this overarching skill of training to do better will transfer. Same for study, practice, learn in science transferring to any other academic area. And, though I haven't seen it as often, between the sports and academics.

*I'll embarrass mom a little. She knew, and knows, far more than she has ever laid claim to. But, the key is regardless of how much she knew, she could never have hoped to answer all questions I asked. Same way that regardless of how much I know, I could never hope to answer all the questions my daughter has asked. As a parent, for us both, the key was, help your child learn more. Encourage that desire to learn more. Support the skills to learn more.

Additional support doesn't need to be expensive. Go for walks, look at the sky (works both day and night), visit the library, tour the internet with your child (perhaps at the library). An inexpensive telescope or microscope, or rock kit, or bug collecting kit, and so on can all be nice additions. But they're not necessary. If you do get things like this, it's a good idea to match them up to your child. A child interested in the stars will be thrilled with a reasonable telescope, while a child interested in insects ... not so much. Go with the flow here, a matter of good parenting anyhow.

Chances are that your child won't become a scientist. That's fine. What they're very likely to do, however, is become interested, informed people. And that's not only fine, but vital. And you'll get to spend time with them, and hear them being enthusiastic about their latest discovery for years while they grow up.

Star Trek

Yes, mom, if you haven't seen it yet, do so. My wife and I, and our youngest son, enjoyed it.

I don't know if the rest of you will like it. But I and my mother have been watching Star Trek, on TV and in movies, since the start of its run on television (yes, I'm over 40 years old). So I know her tastes. If you're towards our end of the viewing spectrum, you'll enjoy it.

Our end is an enjoyment of the at times absurd but enthusiastic exploration that was central to the original series. The current movie regains a lot of that. If you liked, say, the Alice in Wonderland episode, you're set. The 'red matter' is, scientifically, piffle. But no matter. There are some adventure to be had, challenges to be met, some personalities to deal with. And it gets there with some humor. Not stand up comic humor, or pratfall (at least so much). But people (even if some are Vulcans or other things) have their foibles and you live with them. It's aimed at an older audience, in some senses (namely how much clothing some of the women have on) than the original TV series (which, by today's standards, may well get a 'G').

There are also some nice references to the originals, plus the original Spock appearing (Leonard Nimoy, though if I need to tell you that, just go see the movie and have fun with some space opera). If you insist on rigorous self-consistency and sensibility within the movie and with respect to the original series ... I understand Boole wrote a lovely book on Mathematical Logic, and you might enjoy Chandrasekhar's Ellipsoidal Figures of Equilibrium.

And yes, my mother is one of my readers. Where do you think I got the interest in the universe from? Who gave it a pretty free rein when I was growing up? But parenting kids to understand and appreciate science (and writing, and music, and ...) is a different post. I've tried to pass it on, which is a different matter than trying to make my kids become scientists.

Happy Mother's Day

Late in the day, but Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there.

I'll also mention a virtual 'Mothers' project, for women who are scientists to pass word on to women (their virtual daughters) who would be scientists -- the Letters to our Daughters project. There have been a number of letters already. Whichever side of that equation you're on, it's probably worth a look.

Miscellaneous recent things

Been doing interesting (to me, at least) things at work and home, which has translated to not doing much by way of the blog. Some of those activities will translate to blog entries one of these days. For now, some odds and ends of thoughts.

Reading:
I've just finished Dante's Inferno (the Ciardi translation). I'm more than a little puzzled about how this is supposed to be great literature. Any ideas?

A little farther back, I finally read my copy of Copernicus' On the Revolution of the Heavenly Spheres -- his 1543 book that contributed so much to the intellectual revolutions of the next couple centuries. It was interesting on a number of counts, and I'll be blogging about some of them. Shortly after that, I read Jack Repchack's Copernicus' Secret, which gives an interesting biography of Copernicus and context he was working in.

Running:
I've had an interrupted return to my running this year, calf complaints off and on. But Sunday I did make my first run of 30 minutes with no walking. Good news, as the 30 is a major fitness point and means I can go to a local 5k and finish it ok. Not fast, but ok.

Day job:
I'm officially moving in to working on sea surface temperature. That's been under way for a while, but recently took up some new bits. So expect some entries about what sea surface temperature is (turns out there are multiple answers), how it's measured, and the like.

Ok, I know that on April 1 I am supposed to write some kind of a joke or spoof. But I'm just not feeling creative today. At least not that sort of creative.
